Private First Class Felix Longoria earned a Bronze Service Star, a Purple Heart, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Combat Infantryman's badge for service in the Philippines during World War II. Yet the only funeral parlor in his hometown of Three Rivers, Texas, refused to hold a wake for the slain soldier because "the whites would not like it." Almost overnight, this act of discrimination became a defining moment in the rise of Mexican American activism. It launched Dr. Héctor P. García and his newly formed American G.I. Forum into the vanguard of the Mexican civil rights movement, while simultaneously endangering and advancing the career of Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, who arranged for Longoria's burial with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.

In this book, Patrick Carroll provides the first fully researched account of the Longoria controversy and its far-reaching consequences. Drawing on extensive documentary evidence and interviews with many key figures, including Dr. García and Mrs. Longoria, Carroll convincingly explains why the Longoria incident, though less severe than other acts of discrimination against Mexican Americans, ignited the activism of a whole range of interest groups from Argentina to Minneapolis. By putting Longoria's wake in a national and international context, he also clarifies why it became such a flash point for conflicting understandings of bereavement, nationalism, reason, and emotion between two powerful cultures—Mexicanidad and Americanism.

Excellent book!

I read this book for a Mexican-American history class. The book is about what happened to the remains of PFC Felix Longoria, an American citizen, who earned four medals for his service before dying during WWII. When he died, his body was shipped back to his hometown in Texas, but the only funeral parlor there refused to hold services for him because "the whites would not like it." This book introduces Dr. Héctor García as a character who should be studied in high school as an American civil rights leader, discusses LBJ's earlier career as a civil rights leader, and describes the lengths to which the Longoria family had to go in order to have Felix Longoria properly buried - at Arlington National Cemetery. By the time of his burial the Longoria debate had gone nation-wide and had lasting consequences.

This book is engaging, well-written, and opens up a whole new world of civil rights history. I highly recommend it as an excellent starting place for Mexican-American or Chicano/a history.

An indispensable primer on today's architecture: how we got here and where we should be headed

Siegel gives a concise and engaging overview of last century’s transition from people-oriented, traditional architecture to technology-focused, modernist architecture. He relates how the dehumanized sterility of modernism ultimately gave way to two contrasting forms of postmodern architecture: a neotraditionalism that is often insincere, and a discordant or flamboyant avant-gardism that takes nothing seriously.

Having pointed out that modernist architecture was part of a larger cultural project aimed at “spreading blind faith in technology and progress,” he argues that we should once again make architecture “part of the larger cultural conversation,” only this time with different ideals in mind, such as simplicity, human scale, historic continuity and the subordination of modern technology and the modern economy to human needs.

The cultural reconstruction project that Siegel advocates is something with which many will surely identify.

Siegel points out that today's New Urbanists tend to ignore architecture and focus solely on urban design. His argument that such a focus is insufficient is persuasive and should be heeded.

He then describes foundational concepts, methods, and tools that prepare the reader to analyze inventory problems in which uncertainty plays a key role. Dynamic optimization is an important part of this preparation, which emphasizes insights gained from studying the role of uncertainty, rather than focusing on the derivation of numerical solutions and algorithms (with the exception of two chapters on computational issues in infinite-horizon models).

All fourteen chapters in the book, and four of the five appendixes, conclude with exercises that either solidify or extend the concepts introduced. Some of these exercises have served as Ph.D. qualifying examination questions in the Operations, Information, and Technology area of the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

A fabulous collection

This book is full of many good stories. For example the wonderful story by Elizabeth Black, Like a Moth to a Flame, where the Mistress is not all she seems. In Courtney James' Quay Party, one beautiful lady is struggling to keep up with Jacque. And do I want to see that one tattoo on the two stunning ladies? I loved this idea created by Giselle Renade. I would also loved to have seen the old dress recalled by two old friends as well as the activities that then ensued by the new couple; This was a lovely story by Viva Jones. And then not forgetting, Alive by Clarice Clique, a story full of substance that it is far more than just erotic prose.

What is the biggest compliment to this collection is the regret felt when each of the stories ended. I do hope one day we see the next chapter of Like a Moth to a Flame, hint hint, Elizabeth Black?

Swap till you drop!

This was a really good anthology. Great choice of stories by Miranda Forbes. My personal favourite was Party Favour because it's so naughty and one of my fantasies, all those men doing whatever they want, phew! Love The Couple with the Dragon Tattoo too because the straightlaced characters are just soooo straightlaced. Ms Renarde never fails to disappoint with something a bit different. Buy this one if you're looking for menage and variety.
