About the authors

Bob Matthews is Lecturer in Social Policy at the University of Birmingham, UK. Bob currently teaches and researches in Comparative Social Policy, Social Inclusion, Health Policy and Research Methods.

Liz Ross is Lecturer in Social Policy at the University of Birmingham, UK. Liz has taught social research methods on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and is Programme Co-ordinator of Birmingham’s MA Policy into Practice.

I chose this rating because Amazon was absolutely amazing!! The book 'Research Methods: A practical guide for the social sciences' that i purchased was second hand, but iin mmaculate condition and was shipped/ arrived approximately 2-4 weeks earlier than suggested!

I would recommend Amazon to anyone particularly over expensive University bookshops such as Unibooks or other retailers!!

About the Author

Sharon Adelman Reyes is program director for DiversityLearningK12, a consulting and professional development group specializing in the education of English language learners.

She holds a Ph.D. in curriculum design from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she specialized in multicultural and bilingual education. Over a career spanning more than 30 years, she has worked as a teacher, principal, curriculum specialist, district administrator, college professor, and educational researcher. She has taught at the elementary, secondary, and university levels and is a recipient of the Kohl International Prize for Exemplary Teaching.

Reyes has co-authored three books: Diary of a Bilingual School (with James Crawford; DiversityLearningK12, 2012); Teaching in Two Languages: A Guide for K-12 Bilingual Educators (with Tatyana Kleyn; Corwin, 2010); and Constructivist Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners (with Trina Vallone; Corwin, 2008). Her publications also include peer-reviewed journal articles, a peer-reviewed book chapter, magazine articles, curriculum guides, and program reviews.

While holding academic positions at St. Xavier, Loyola-Chicago, and Gonzaga universities, Reyes developed and implemented undergraduate and graduate-level programs in bilingual/bicultural education and TESOL; taught in a graduate program in educational leadership in ELL contexts; and chaired the doctoral dissertations of students in related areas of research.

Since 1999, Reyes has worked directly with K–12 schools serving low-income communities to improve curriculum and instruction in ESL, dual immersion, transitional bilingual education, and literacy. Her consulting has included developing, guiding, and evaluating programs; providing teachers with field support and professional development workshops on site; and working closely with school administrators to facilitate these efforts.

She has presented in her field locally, nationally, and internationally, and has served as an educational consultant in school districts throughout the United States. Her current research interests include the preparation of educators and educational leaders for diverse classrooms and educational contexts, constructivist practice in ELL contexts, and bilingual schooling.

Trina Lynn Vallone-Bastida holds a MA in reading from Saint Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois and is a certified Reading Specialist. She has spent several years researching multicultural education and language acquisition. Ms. Vallone has presented at several conferences where she has examined such topics as writer’s workshop, content area reading, working with struggling readers and best practice for English Language Learners. Ms. Vallone taught primary aged children before becoming an Assistant Professor at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Il, where she teaches Methods of Teaching Reading; Cross Cultural Studies and Reading in the Content Area. Currently, Trina is working on her Doctorate in curriculum and instruction at Aurora University in Aurora, Illinois.

About the Author
Bill Eddy is a lawyer, therapist, mediator and the President of High Conflict Institute. He developed the "High Conflict Personality" theory (HCP Theory) and has become an international expert on managing disputes involving high-conflict personalities and personality disorders. He provides training on this subject to lawyers, judges, mediators, managers, human resource professionals, businesspersons, healthcare administrators, college administrators, homeowners’ association managers, ombudspersons, law enforcement, therapists and others. He has been a speaker and trainer in over 25 states, several provinces in Canada, Australia, France and Sweden.

As an attorney, Bill is a Certified Family Law Specialist in California and the Senior Family Mediator at the National Conflict Resolution Center in San Diego. Prior to becoming an attorney in 1992, he was a Licensed Clinical Social worker with twelve years’ experience providing therapy to children, adults, couples and families in psychiatric hospitals and outpatient clinics. He has taught Negotiation and Mediation at the University of San Diego School of Law for six years and he is on the part-time faculty of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University School of Law and the National Judicial College.

About the Author
Scott Robertson has almost two decades of experience teaching how to design, draw, and render at the highest college level. He has authored or co-authored 11 books on design and concept art. In addition to books, he has co-produced over 40 educational DVDs with The Gnomon Workshop, of which nine feature his own lectures. For several years, Scott chaired the Entertainment Design department at Art Center College of Design. He frequently lectures around the world for various corporations, colleges, and through his own workshop brand, SRW. In addition to teaching, Scott has worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from vehicle and alien designs for the Hot Wheels animated series Battle Force Five, to theme park attractions such as the Men in Black ride in Orlando, Florida for Universal Studios. Some of his clients include the BMW subsidiary Design-works/USA, Bell Sports, Giro, Mattel Toys, Spin Master Toys, Patagonia, the feature film Minority Report, Nike, Rockstar Games, Sony Online Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Buena Vista Games, THQ, and Fiat to name just a few.

Thomas Bertling has an extensive background as a successful industrial designer and engineer, with a varied array of clients such as Disney, Samsung, and Whole Foods, and a diverse portfolio of completed products on the market, from state-of-the-art medical innovations to combat-ready military vehicles. This hands-on expertise gives him a distinct approach and remarkable edge in addition to being an acclaimed design educator. Fantastic Primer on Perspective Drawing.

This is a fantastic reference for anyone who desires to learn the basics of sketching in perspective. Perspective drawing is the key focus on this book, but it also does a good job at showing how perspective in your drawing compares to scenes in reality.

There are other books out there that teach things that are shown well in this book, but the thing that I think makes this one unique is that it brings so many different aspects of perspective, sketching, and object design together in one place. And while it doesn't include every technique available to a designer or artist, this explains a tremendous toolset that you'll be able to use (very quickly!) to produce most anything you can imagine. Isn't that the goal?

The quality of the book is fantastic (I got the "paperback" version) with some of the thickest paper of any book I own. Each page is in full color (most publishers would have cut corners as many of the images only include spots of color and the temptation to make it greyscale had to be high).

Also included is a link list to video lessons. There is an upcoming app that will allow you to scan images from many of the pages to trigger the videos, but it's not yet available on iOS or Google Play store (at least it didn't show up as linked from the QR code and separate searches). The link list works with your computer or a tablet. I'll update this review when the app becomes available.

If you are unfamiliar with Scott Robertson, I highly recommend searching for him in YouTube. I've been following him for years and have 7 of his drawing, rendering, and designing DVDs from the Gnomon workshop. This book and the videos is a nice companion to those, but much less expensive! (Those DVDs were $30 each). Even with that background, I'm very happy with Scott's latest book.

LOVE this book

LOVE this book. I bought it because I wanted to expand on what Scott teaches in his videos, but when I got it I realized that it is more valuable than any book I got in college. The perspective lessons alone make it worth the price of admission so to speak. The other night I was trying to figure out a particularily complicated angle/foreshortening problem. After I was about ready to give up, I flipped through the book and used Scott's techniques to work it out. Can't recommend this enough. Anyone who wants to get better at technical drawing - sci-fi or otherwise - would do well to making this part of their reference library.

Wow, packed with information!

When i first got it, i was shocked to see how thick it was. More pages than i thought, seems very thorough of the subject.
I skimmed through the pages, and boy you can tell so much effort is put into this.
It may be difficult to grasp, but you have to reread and take your time trying to understand - you will get it eventually.
The book have many sketches with guidelines, so you have to train yourself to be able to "read" what/how he did it (naturally as you read the book) in order to learn each lesson.
The most amazing aspect of the book is that some section of the book have a video to go with it (online url/link or through electronic scan with ipad or something). It will show and explain certain things much clearer, so i recommend you watch the videos as well.

I was skeptical about it being $34 (on sale too), but after seeing how much information it provides, it is certainly worth it.
Glad i bought the hardcover as well, this is a great entry in my collection of fundamental drawing books.

Dr. Simon Monk has a degree in Cybernetics and Computer Science and a PhD in Software Engineering. Simon Monk really does take Arduino to the next level!

This book came along at just the right time for me! I had pretty much exhausted my ideas for Arduino projects, and had spent a lot of time online lately, looking for some new project ideas. This book has way more new ideas than what I found on the Internet in recent weeks. As an amateur radio operator, I was really interested in the digital signal processing chapter. My other great love is GIS, GPS, and maps. So, I was thrilled to see ideas for GPS interfacing. Adding to the fun was the Memory chapter. I'm already collecting the parts to assemble my own GPS system with data logging on micros SD Card. The USB chapter has a load of new ideas I have to experiment with. There are so many other good, fresh, new ideas in this book that I will be busy with it for a long time. Since most of the program code is downloadable, the book is not filled up with pages of code listings that you're going to download anyway. Instead, it's full of the descriptions, ideas, graphics, and other solid information that I needed. So, in a way, it probably has more useful data than a book twice its size. If you're an Arduino fan, beginner or expert, this book is over 250 pages packed full of information that you don't want to miss out on.

Must Have Guide

This book is the missing link between the basic Arduino guides and more advanced reading, like Practical Arduino, Arduino Cookbook and Making Things Talk - all of which present useful and quite complex projects but without the sort of background details that many Arduino fans require. In this book Simon delves into those areas of the Arduino that sooner or later you WILL need to know if you are planning any sort of embedded Arduino project. It came at the right time for me since I have been planning a project that requires PWM dimming of LEDs to accurate preset frequencies and uses the DS18B20 one-wire chip as both a temperature sensor and a place to store lamp type data. I also want to add SPI to my project. The areas around interrupts and the one-wire interface have long been a mystery to me and Simon goes a long way to explain the basics of both in his usual easy-to-read style.

Other chapters cover application speed, power considerations, EEPROM, SPI, USB, UART, Networking and I2C. Sooner or later you will want to be using these more advanced techniques in your projects. This book will provide all you need to know to get you going and will remain on my desktop as a handy reference guide.

Good book for solving Arduino-related problems

I've purchased several of Mr. Monk's books and they have all been very good. He and the publisher have taken the right track by segregating each book into the appropriate audience level. I would place this book in the intermediate level, as it assumes you are familiar with C and have done some Arduino programming. However, sprinkled throughout the book are little nuggets that might take you years to discover on your own. Each chapter discusses one subject (e.g., USB programming, signal processing, interrupts, etc.) The organization makes it perfect for the programmer with some Arduino experience because, at that level, you are likely reading this book to address some problem that you are experiencing. Another measure of the utility of a book is the depth of its index. Indeed, it's one of the first things I check when buying a book, especially one like this where I want to find answers to questions. As an author of 18 programming books myself, I know how bad some indexers are for a publisher. This book's index is better than most and does have enough depth to narrow your search and, once at the appropriate point in the book, he always does a good job explaining the point at hand.

Mr. Monk and I are competitors and in some ways I wish he would retire from writing. However, doing so would severely lessen the talent pool for Arduino books.

Great Book

This book is really good for both work and my Masters project. Its especially suited for computer science though and gives excellent ideas from deciding the topic of your project to the steps involved and what not to do. Its worth it, yet difficult to find. I say buy it, its a very useful book, thus far.Even my friends find it appropriate, but like i said....its a kind of computer science project guide.
