From Publishers Weekly
Folklore, fairy tales and dream symbols are called on to help restore women's neglected intuitive and instinctive abilities in this earthy first book by a Jungian analyst. According to Estes, wolves and women share a psychic bond in their fierceness, grace and devotion to mate and community. This comparison defines the archetype of the Wild Woman, a female in touch with her primitive side and able to rely on gut feelings to make choices. The tales here, from various cultures, are not necessarily about wolves; instead, they illuminate fresh perspectives on relationships, self-image, even addiction. An African tale of twins who baffle a man represents the dual nature of woman; from the Middle East, a story about a threadbare but secretly magic carpet shows society's failure to look beyond appearances. Three brief, ribald stories advocate a playful, open sexuality; other examples suggest ways to deal with anger and jealousy. At times, Estes's commentary--in which she urges readers to draw upon and enjoy their Wild Woman aspects--is hyperbolic, but overall her widely researched study offers usable advice for modern women.

From Kirkus Reviews
A feminist counterpart to Iron John--or, how ``a healthy woman is much like a wolf.'' Est‚s, a Jungian analyst, believes that a woman's wholeness depends on her returning to the sources of her repressed instinctual nature. To illustrate the ways of the ``wild woman,'' the author draws on myths, legends, and fairy tales from a vast and eclectic range of traditions. This collection of stories may well be the most valuable element of the book, which otherwise reads like unedited transcripts of the workshops Est‚s leads to encourage women to return to their ``feral'' roots. Each story demonstrates a particular aspect of woman's experience--relationship, creativity, anger, spirituality, etc. Est‚s finds evidence in the most diverse tales of the necessity for women to reclaim their wildness. The precise nature of this wildness is difficult to fathom, but, at best, it seems to include a genuine capacity to access feelings and to accept one's contradictions, while, at worst, it appears to amount to the kind of self-indulgence that prevailed during the ``me'' generation. Est‚s claims that her book is for every woman, ``whether you be spicy or somber, regal or roughshod''; but her underlying assumption that every woman is free to abandon what holds her back seems ignorant of social and economic realities. The author provides few concrete examples that might help women understand what she expects them to do, and her prose abounds in generalizations and oddities (``the ambitious woman...who is heartfelt toward her accomplishments'') that further undermine her credibility and her considerable scholarship. Hortatory, ecstatic, and, ultimately, irritating. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Let Your Inner Wild Woman Roar
By Amazon Customer
I would highly recommend this book to any woman who is on the great journey called life. For women who have lost their way, lost track of the creative/ intuitive voice inside. For women who have found their way back to that creative/ intuitive voice inside. Or for any woman who just needs a boost in their life. This book spoke to me so much, especially as a recovered alcoholic. Learning about how my past has played a part in who I am today, how my addiction has played into my life today, and finding my inner La Que Sabe. Wonderful read for women of all ages.

This book is for someone who wants to be awaken.
By Oxana Alexandra
If your true wolf nature is calling you, look into it and listen carefully. It might mean that your soul is asking you to awaken and start taking better care of yourself. I was reluctant to get the book at first because I was struggling with the image of a creature with a ferocious attitude, ravenous desires, and unfulfilled appetites. I couldn't have been father from the truth. Once I started reading the book, I leaned that the creature inside me had a beautiful flip side, which helped me heal my old wounds, love this "child," this "ugly ducking," love myself, all of me. I learned that the wolf in me was creative, family oriented, strong, enduring, and extremely loyal to her mate, to her young, and to her pack. The wolf in me was also a feral woman, although it holds true for a feral man as well, who was born wild, not the "out-of-control" wild, but the one with healthy instincts and intact psyche. Then this woman's spirit was domesticated with a "proper upbringing" and her instincts got injured in the captivity of artificial norms, of false life, while she was still too young, naïve, and trusting to know any better. She became crippled by the excessive control from without, which she then adopted as the control mechanism from within. This mechanism became a cheap substitute, which replaced her natural wiring. She had to find the way back to the original untamed state in order to reclaim her individuality and sovereignty. This book helped me do just that.

Object-Oriented System Analysis and Design, by Joey F. George, Dinesh Batra, Joseph S. Valacich, Jeffrey A. Hoffer

This book approaches system analysis and design with an object-oriented perspective, faithful to UML and others currently in use in many organizations. The SDC is central in the development of an information system; the book shows how each step of the SDC builds on itself. It provides readers with a strong systematic framework, linking one chapter to the next; this approach enables readers to easily learn object-oriented system analysis and design. All terminology and diagrams are UML compliant. A running case (The Pine Valley Furniture Webstore) is used throughout the book as an example. Readers can develop, propose, implement, and maintain a Webstore, learning through doing. The end-of-chapter case, Broadway Entertainment Company Inc., shows readers how a fictional video and record retailer develops an object-oriented application. Coverage includes: foundations for object-oriented systems development; project planning and management; systems analysis; systems design; and systems implementation and operation. An excellent “how-to” guide for systems analysts and designers.

Soon to be the subject of a major motion picture starring Naomi Watts as the Princess of Wales

An icon remembered in death as vividly as she appeared in life, Diana, Princess of Wales, is one of the most enduring personalities of the twentieth century-and one of the most enigmatic. With exclusive access to all those closest to Diana, Sarah Bradford now casts aside the gossip and lies and takes us to the very heart of the royal family to separate the myth from the truth of the Diana years. With the authority missing from previous accounts, as well as remarkable new sources, Diana delivers a complex and explosive look at a woman who continues to fascinate.

From Publishers Weekly
This biography of the doomed Princess of Wales by Bradford, an experienced British celebrity biographer, was published with far less fanfare, though also embargoed, than the concurrent one by Diana's former butler, Paul Burrell, it still purports to be the definitive look at what it was really like for Diana Spencer to become the princess of Wales. But even the most casual student of Diana mania will be hard pressed to find much that hasn't been told before. Bradford, the author of books about such disparate figures as Benjamin Disraeli and Princess Grace of Monaco, does offer up a more balanced portrait than some: Diana was not the brightest bulb, but her compassion for others was central and real; in spite of—or because of—this sensitivity, she was a master at playing people off each other (most notably her onetime lover James Hewitt). According to Bradford, Diana truly did love Charles and was "obsessed" with him until the end. More surprisingly, Bradford also insists that Charles genuinely loved Diana, even as he carried a torch for Camilla Parker Bowles, and that his apparent ill treatment of his wife came from ignorance more than hostility. The usual cast of famous characters appear, but two portraits particularly stand out: Sarah Ferguson and Dodi Fayed. As for Fayed, Bradford downplays it; Diana liked him, she says, but was far less interested in him, personally, than in what he could provide (private yachts, freedom from the press and—ironically, as it turned out—safety). Surely, Fayed's friends and family will not enjoy Bradford's take on him as a spoiled layabout with a cocaine problem, drug use being one the few weaknesses of which Diana disapproved. For those for whom there can never be enough said about the late princess, Bradford's book may provide some color and perspective; those looking for dish will likely be disappointed.(Sept.)

Sarah Bradford is a historian and biographer. From AudioFile
Bradford details the life of the Princess of Wales fully, but briskly, and Kate Kellgren, in a very British accent ("more" sounding like "maw," etc.), keeps it moving. The writing ranges from undistinguished to awkward, but isn't, as in the case of some celeb bios, actually awful. Kellgren's reading, somewhat too good for the text, serves to dress it up. She modulates her voice with sensitivity, expressing sympathy or regret where appropriate, which is often, but keeps at a cool observer's distance from the sometimes tawdry details. She stays true to the text, which is understanding of Diana, but not overly censorious of Prince Charles or his paramour, Camilla. This sad story is here adequately written and well read. first real biography of Diana, Princess of Wales
By David C. Drewer
This is the first proper biography of Diana, Princess of Wales, as opposed to memoirs by former employees (Jephson, Wharfe, Burrell) or more or less ax-grinding efforts by journalists (Morton, Seward, Junor). Bradford, an experienced biographer, has produced a sound and workmanlike book, and without sacrificing balance or accuracy or contending that the late princess was a flawless biped makes the best pro-Diana case to date.

After reading Bradford it is hard to deny that the Royal Family and their courtiers, the British Establishment, and especially the Prince of Wales entered into this marriage in deeply bad faith, and covertly slandered Diana when it turned sour. Clarence House trotted out Princes William and Harry to denounce Jephson, Wharfe and Burrell as traducers of their mother's memory; it would be interesting to hear their spin on Bradford's far more (justly) damning portrayal of their father.

Naturally this book relies more on oral interviews than archival research, and (with the occasional and unavoidable exception "Private information") Bradford plays fair with the reader in revealing her sources. She singles out Burrell for skepticism, perhaps reasonably, but otherwise appears to take a very trusting attitude to equally debatable sources (showing indulgence to Jephson, Wharfe, and - surprisingly - James Hewitt). I would like to believe that this favoritism was on their merits and not due to the fact that (judging from the notes) Jephson, Wharfe and Hewitt agreed to be interviewed by Bradford and Burrell didn't.

One Bob Woodward is enough.

My first reading of this book revealed two errors. Nicholas Soames, one of Diana's least savory detractors, is said to be Sir Winston Churchill's great-grandson; he was his grandson. Bill and Hillary Clinton are listed as attending Diana's funeral; the Senator attended but not the President. Neither of these is a hanging offense, but both should have been corrected in the editing process, and one wonders what other, less obvious errors are present. This is too good a book to be disfigured by such petty mistakes.

About the Author
Beattie was a struggling single parent of two children and freelance author and journalist cranking out stories for a small-town daily newspaper in 1986 when she came up with a book idea. She wanted to write a book about what happens to people when they love someone who is addicted to alcohol and other drugs."There were many books out there about how to help an addict or alcoholic. Nobody was talking about how an addict impacts the lives of the people around him or her, and how crazy you can become when you love someone who is addicted," Beattie said. "Even though I was sober, I didn't know how crazy I could get until it happened to me." Twenty publishers turned down Beattie's book proposal. "It's a good idea, but we don't think there's that many codependents out there," they wrote back.Hazelden, however, a treatment center and recovery publisher based in Minnesota, saw a need for the book. The publisher understood how families of alcoholics suffer and believed Beattie's book idea would help people. Beattie marched to the welfare department, asked for enough financial help to make it through the three months it would take her to write the book, then locked herself in a basement office and cranked out Codependent No More. Codependent No More has now sold 3.5 million copies. Beattie has since written nine more books, five for major publishing houses on the east and west coasts. She relocated from Minnesota to California, and she has long-since paid back the welfare department. Beattie has appeared in the pages of Newsweek and People and has been a regular guest on Geraldo and Oprah. Playing It By Heart is Beattie's first original book for Hazelden since 1990; the book is a return to her recovery roots that first brought her national recognition.

This is a book of essays, meditations, and activities—one for each day of the year. You can use it to begin your year on January 1. Or you can begin your year on your birthday, the day some people believe begins their personal new year. It's a companion book to the original Language of Letting Go (not a replacement or updated edition) and can be used by itself or in conjunction with that book. You can roll along with your life and use the book to address issues that arise. Or you can use this book as a workbook—or "playbook"—to address specific areas and issues you'd like to focus on in the upcoming year, such as releasing an outdated relationship or behavior, achieving cherished goals, or moving to the next level in work, in love, or in life.

The essay that falls on the first day of each month explores the theme for the month. Each monthly topic is a major component in the process of letting go. You will also notice that skydiving, my new passion, has turned out to be a beautiful metaphor for the art of letting go and letting God do for us what we can't do for ourselves.

I use God as the predominant word for references to God, Higher Power, Jehovah, or Allah. I may use He or She as the pronoun for God, depending on my mood. I mean no harm, nor is it my intention to discriminate or offend. Substitute whatever word pleases you to describe your idea of God.

The prayers and ideas are meant as suggestions.

May God bless you, your family, friends, and loved ones in this year to come. And may you guide yourself joyfully through the journey you choose, or have been called, to take.

January 1                                                        Trust that good will come

It was a slow, boring January day at the Blue Sky Lodge. We had just moved in. The house was a mess. Construction hadn't begun yet. All we had was a plan, and a dream. It was too cold and rainy to skydive or even be outdoors. There wasn't any furniture yet. We were lying around on the floor.

I don't know who got the idea first, him or me. But we both picked up Magic Markers about the same time. Then we started drawing on the wall.

"What do you want to happen in your life?" I asked. He drew pictures of seaplanes, and mountains, and boats leaving the shore. One picture was a video-camera man, jumping out of a plane. "I want adventure," he said.

I drew pictures of a woman tromping around the world. She went to war-torn countries, then sat on a fence and watched. She visited the mountains and the oceans and many exciting places. Then I drew a heart around the entire picture, and she sat there in the middle of all the experiences on a big stack of books.

"I want stories," I said, "ones with a lot of heart."

Across the entire picture, in big letters, he wrote the word "Woohoo."

As an afterthought, I drew a woman sky diver who had just jumped out of the plane. She was frightened and grimacing. Next to her I wrote the words "Just relax."

On the bottom of the wall I wrote, "The future is only limited by what we can see now." He grabbed a marker, crossed out "only," and changed it to "never."

"There," he said, "it's done."

Eventually, the house got cleaned up and the construction finished. Furniture arrived. And yellow paint covered the pictures on the wall. We didn't think much about that wall until months later. Sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly, and sometimes in ways we'd least expect, each of the pictures we'd drawn on that wall began to materialize and manifest.

"It's a magic wall," I said.

Even if you can't imagine what's coming next, relax. The good pictures are still there. The wall will soon become covered with the story of your life. Thank God, the future is never limited by what we can see right now.

The wall isn't magic.

The magic is in us and what we believe.

Before we start speaking the language of letting go, we need to understand what a powerful behavior letting go and letting God really is.

God, help me do my part. Then help me let go, and let you do yours.

Activity: Meditate for a moment on the year ahead. Make a list of things you'd like to see happen, attributes you'd like to gain, things you'd like to get and do, changes you'd like to occur. You don't have to limit the list to this year. What do you want to happen in your life? Make a list of places you'd like to visit and things you'd like to see. Leave room for the unexpected, the unintended. But make room for the possibility of what you'd like, too—your intentions, wishes, dreams, hopes, and goals. Also, list what you're ready to let go of, too—things, people, attitudes, and behaviors you'd like to release. If anything were possible, anything at all, what are the possibilities you'd like to experience and see?

January 2                                                                                Doing my part

The surest way to become Tense, Awkward, and Confused is to develop a mind that tries too hard—one that thinks too much.
—Benjamin Hoff, The Tao of Pooh

The universe will help us, but we need to do our part as well. Here's an acronym, My Part, to help you remember what it means to do that.

Manifest
Your

Power
Accept
Relax
Trust

Too often, we tell ourselves the only way to get from point A to point B—or Z—is to tense up, obsess a little (or a lot), and live in fear and anxiety until what we want takes place.

That isn't the path to success. It's the path to fear and anxiety.

Accept. Relax. Breathe. Let go. Trust yourself, God, and the universe to manifest the best possible destiny when the time is right for you.

God, help me make the journey from fear and control to letting go and stepping into my true power.

January 3                                                                    Bring your ideals to life

There is a Zen story about two monks walking down a street after a heavy rain. Arriving at a corner, they came upon a beautiful girl in fine clothing unable to cross the muddy street without getting filthy.

"Here, I'll help you," said one monk. Lifting her in his arms, he carried her to the other side. The two monks walked in silence for a long time.

"We've sworn a vow of celibacy and are not supposed to go near women. It's dangerous," the second monk said to the first. "Why did you do that?"

"I left the girl back at the corner," the first monk said. "Are you still carrying her?"

Sometimes, we may find ourselves in a situation where our ideals conflict. Being kind and loving to another person may conflict with our value of being committed and loving toward ourselves.

When one ideal imposes on another, then use your judgment. Do the right thing by others. Do the right thing by yourself, too. Then let the incident pass and move on.

For the monks in our story, right action usually meant not having contact with women. However, when encountering a stranded person on the road, right action became helping others. Ideals remain. Right thought, right action, right speech—but the path to those ideals may twist and turn throughout life. Be sensitive and aware that you are following an ideal and not a rigid belief.

God, help me learn when it's time to let go.

Activity: In an earlier activity, we explored our goals and dreams list. Now, let's determine the ethics and ideals we want to live by, the code of conduct we want to follow. What's of foremost importance to you, whether or not your dreams come true and you achieve your goals? Examples of ideals may be staying clean and sober, honoring your commitments to others, and honoring your commitment to yourself. Many people choose additional spiritual values, such as compassion, honesty, tolerance. Some people choose to live by an ideal they call "Christ Consciousness," some "Buddha Consciousness," some the "Twelve Steps," and some the "Ten Commandments." List your ideals, and put that list with your goals. Let these ideals be a light that guides your path and allows you to live in harmony with others and yourself.

From AudioFile
This is the smoothest and most developed of Beattie's audios, which are all focused on recovering from addiction, having healthy connections with others, and living one's inner life to its fullest. Her audios, all narrated in a slow and thoughtful voice, are all full of compassion and hope. But this one is especially touching, as if the author has found even more personal security and moral confidence than she has expressed in her previous audios. She floats above herself and seems to have no personal agenda as she tells stories that are touching and rich with visual imagery. These are punctuated by activities and meditations very appropriate for the themes. A marvelous listening and growing experience. AWSOME PART 2. gET BOTH BOOKS
By Tammy ORourke
Its more of how get control over yourself after addictive behaviors start happening.. I recommend both her books of Letting GO. you will also learn about codependency, This book talks about codependency straight up truth. I suffered from that for many years. Someone years ago gave me a book on it. I was in my early 20_s a little bit neive, was eager too understand exactly that book I was reading was all about me. From that point in my life I began healing and getting stronger in the way I viewed my relationship...the first book letting go by Melody Beattie was about 17years ago. I have too say I knew what I had too do, make a plan too get out of that DESTRUCTIVE relationship. Honest the more I studied, the more courage I got.. Today I"m in a great relationship, no control. I"m happy too say we are both equal. I was mesmerized when I found her new book More Language Of Letting GO. She changed my life too where I felt Whole, worthy, also all along it was not my fault.

Anyyone can gain good insight from any of Melody Beattie's words
By Marian M
Great book that you can use daily year after year. It has a message for each day of the year and you can pick it up anytime. Sometimes they are a little too sappy or religious for me, but not too much that I don't still use it. I just might skip this day and read another days message. These are great daily thoughts to give you something to consider as you move throughout your day. (I think all of Melody Bettie's books are AWESOME for co-dependence issues whether it is you or someone you love). They by far helped me more than any other books on the subject.) P.S. You do not have to be co-dependent or never have been in relationships with alcoholics or abusers for these messages to impact your positivity for the day. Everyone can get something from it.

Daily Meditations
By Amazon Customer
I purchased this book as a gift for someone battling alcoholism. They reported back to me that they use the book daily and began to find it helpful as a compliment to educational groups they have attended. I have a social work background & thru my research discovered that Melanie Beattie writes a lot of books related to addiction and family dynamics and many people who have issues with alcoholism would find them helpful.

Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy, by Cathy O'Neil

A former Wall Street quant sounds an alarm on the mathematical models that pervade modern life - and threaten to rip apart our social fabric

We live in the age of the algorithm. Increasingly the decisions that affect our lives - where we go to school, whether we get a car loan, how much we pay for health insurance - are being made not by humans but by mathematical models. In theory this should lead to greater fairness: Everyone is judged according to the same rules, and bias is eliminated.

But as Cathy O'Neil reveals in this urgent and necessary book, the opposite is true. The models being used today are opaque, unregulated, and uncontestable even when they're wrong. Most troublingly, they reinforce discrimination: If a poor student can't get a loan because a lending model deems him too risky (by virtue of his zip code), he's then cut off from the kind of education that could pull him out of poverty, and a vicious spiral ensues. Models are propping up the lucky and punishing the downtrodden, creating a "toxic cocktail for democracy". Welcome to the dark side of big data.

Tracing the arc of a person's life, O'Neil exposes the black-box models that shape our future, both as individuals and as a society. These "weapons of math destruction" score teachers and students, sort résumés, grant (or deny) loans, evaluate workers, target voters, set paroles, and monitor our health.

O'Neil calls on modelers to take more responsibility for their algorithms and on policy makers to regulate their use. But in the end, it's up to us to become savvier about the models that govern our lives. This important book empowers us to ask the tough questions, uncover the truth, and demand change.

Stop Using Math as a Weapon
By Amazon Customer
So here you are on Amazon's web page, reading about Cathy O'Neil's new book, Weapons of Math Destruction. Amazon hopes you buy the book (and so do I, it's great!). But Amazon also hopes it can sell you some other books while you're here. That's why, in a prominent place on the page, you see a section entitled:

Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought

This section is Amazon's way of using what it knows -- which book you're looking at, and sales data collected across all its customers -- to recommend other books that you might be interested in. It's a very simple, and successful, example of a predictive model: data goes in, some computation happens, a prediction comes out. What makes this a good model? Here are a few things:

1. It uses relevant input data. The goal is to get people to buy books, and the input to the model is what books people buy. You can't expect to get much more relevant than that.
2. It's transparent. You know exactly why the site is showing you these particular books, and if the system recommends a book you didn't expect, you have a pretty good idea why. That means you can make an informed decision about whether or not to trust the recommendation.
3. There's a clear measure of success and an embedded feedback mechanism. Amazon wants to sell books. The model succeeds if people click on the books they're shown, and, ultimately, if they buy more books, both of which are easy to measure. If clicks on or sales of related items go down, Amazon will know, and can investigate and adjust the model accordingly.

Weapons of Math Destruction reviews, in an accessible, non-technical way, what makes models effective -- or not. The emphasis, as you might guess from the title, is on models with problems. The book highlights many important ideas; here are just a few:

1. Models are more than just math. Take a look at Amazon's model above: while there are calculations (simple ones) embedded, it's people who decide what data to use, how to use it, and how to measure success. Math is not a final arbiter, but a tool to express, in a scalable (i.e., computable) way, the values that people explicitly decide to emphasize. Cathy says that "models are opinions expressed in mathematics" (or computer code). She highlights that when we evaluate teachers based on students' test scores, or assess someone's insurability as a driver based on their credit record, we are expressing opinions: that a successful teacher should boost test scores, or that responsible bill-payers are more likely to be responsible drivers.

2. Replacing what you really care about with what you can easily get your hands on can get you in trouble. In Amazon's recommendation model, we want to predict book sales, and we can use book sales as inputs; that's a good thing. But what if you can't directly measure what you're interested in? In the early 1980's, the magazine US News wanted to report on college quality. Unable to measure quality directly, the magazine built a model based on proxies, primarily outward markers of success, like selectivity and alumni giving. Predictably, college administrators, eager to boost their ratings, focused on these markers rather than on education quality itself. For example, to boost selectivity, they encouraged more students, even unqualified ones, to apply. This is an example of gaming the model.

3. Historical data is stuck in the past. Typically, predictive models use past history to predict future behavior. This can be problematic when part of the intention of the model is to break with the past. To take a very simple example, imagine that Cathy is about to publish a sequel to Weapons of Math Destruction. If Amazon uses only purchase data, the Customers Who Bought This Also Bought list would completely miss the connection between the original and the sequel. This means that if we don't want the future to look just like the past, our models need to use more than just history as inputs. A chapter about predictive models in hiring is largely devoted to this idea. A company may think that its past, subjective hiring system overlooks qualified candidates, but if it replaces the HR department with a model that sifts through resumes based only on the records of past hires, it may just be codifying (pun intended) past practice. A related idea is that, in this case, rather than adding objectivity, the model becomes a shield that hides discrimination. This takes us back to Models are more than just math and also leads to the next point:

4. Transparency matters! If a book you didn't expect shows up on The Customers Who Bought This Also Bought list, it's pretty easy for Amazon to check if it really belongs there. The model is pretty easy to understand and audit, which builds confidence and also decreases the likelihood that it gets used to obfuscate. An example of a very different story is the value added model for teachers, which evaluates teachers through their students' standardized test scores. Among its other drawbacks, this model is especially opaque in practice, both because of its complexity and because many implementations are built by outsiders. Models need to be openly assessed for effectiveness, and when teachers receive bad scores without knowing why, or when a single teacher's score fluctuates dramatically from year to year without explanation, it's hard to have any faith in the process.

5. Models don't just measure reality, but sometimes amplify it, or create their own. Put another way, models of human behavior create feedback loops, often becoming self-fulfilling prophecies. There are many examples of this in the book, especially focusing on how models can amplify economic inequality. To take one example, a company in the center of town might notice that workers with longer commutes tend to turn over more frequently, and adjust its hiring model to focus on job candidates who can afford to live in town. This makes it easier for wealthier candidates to find jobs than poorer ones, and perpetuates a cycle of inequality. There are many other examples: predictive policing, prison sentences based on recidivism, e-scores for credit. Cathy talks about a trade-off between efficiency and fairness, and, as you can again guess from the title, argues for fairness as an explicit value in modeling.

Weapons of Math Destruction is not a math book, and it is not investigative journalism. It is short -- you can read it in an afternoon -- and it doesn't have time or space for either detailed data analysis (there are no formulas or graphs) or complete histories of the models she considers. Instead, Cathy sketches out the models quickly, perhaps with an individual anecdote or two thrown in, so she can get to the main point -- getting people, especially non-technical people, used to questioning models. As more and more aspects of our lives fall under the purview of automated data analysis, that's a hugely important undertaking.

Models without Morality
By Graham Webster
This is a well written book about the data science algorithms that can influence our lives. If all they were responsible for was recommending other books we might be interested in reading, then the topic wouldn't be very important. However, they influence an increasing number of areas in our lives, from insurance pricing, college admissions to hiring decisions, so it is important that the assumptions that underlay these models be explicit and transparent. That's mostly not the case, and in fact, many models take into account data for which it is not legal for a human to take account of. The black box nature of these models is a concern.

I think O'Neil makes a solid argument against the unregulated use of these black box models in society.

O'Neil touches on the issue of the lack of ethics in the tech industry, where smart people are focused on making money and lose sight of the negative impact their work has on much of society.

By Peter
Well written, with no math needed to understand the problems with bias, discrimination and injustice that Cathy exposes. Personally I would have liked to see some of the types of algorithms that Cathy describes, but that's because I was a math major in college - and that's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars.

The examples of school teachers being judged on invalid assessments, and likely cheating of the system by other teachers to make sure they don't get fired really hit home as to how bad the mathematical formulas can be in deciding who gets or keeps a job. I'm familiar with the hiring algorithm practices of one of the companies Cathy describes in her book, and I heard the flip side of the rejection process from one of its employees. Supposedly after taking the psychological application test, if a candidate does really well, an alert is sent to the hiring manager in real time to go meet the candidate to offer them a job before they leave the building. I hope the pending class action lawsuit she describes against this company succeeds because there is obvious discrimination going on in the hiring of applicants and many large corporations now use this same employment screening software.

Cathy exposes injustices to average people in many ways they live in our world, from education to employment, credit and financial dealings. Her final chapter is a call for reform of hidden practices that rely on fuzzy math algorithms. It is very important that we can see and understand how decisions are being made about our future, and on what information those decisions are based. If bad data is being used we should be able to correct that. This is definitely needed in the same way that consumers can get to see their credit reports, and report errors to get them corrected.

One of the "Most Impressive" Star Wars Books Ever
By BlagoSucks

Once you get a hand on this book its almost impossible to put it down... the pictures that illustrate the souns are fantastic and the binding for such a large book is impressive!!! If you love Star Wars, you will love this book!

This hardcover book is full of interesting facts and information on this hated enemy of the Rebel alliance. This is a must have collectable and rare find of a book!!! If you can afford a copy, snag one of these! You won't regret it!!!!

Perfect Gift for any Star Wars fan
By Skuldren
The Complete Vader is a great read for any Star Wars fan. Authors Ryder Windham and Pete Vilmur did a great job of keeping the book fun to read and avoiding a dry historical account. The book has lots of fun facts about Vader and Star Wars. Yet there is a lot more to the book than the story when you take into account the tons of beautiful artwork and photos that are included. From Ralph McQuarrie prints and sketches, to behind-the-scenes pictures of the actors and Vader promotional shoots, there is a lot to enjoy. For collectors, a lot of Vader merchandise is also covered. On top of it all, there's also a lot of fun interactive elements such as fold out pictures, hidden pockets with loose articles, and even copies of film cells. Definitely a book that's worth the money.

For the Adult Star Wars Fan
By Noname
[[VIDEOID:mo2Q16I7WX7FD28]]I didn't think I would like "The Complete Vader" and never intended to buy it until I browsed it in the bookstore. It is not what I expected. There are replica posters, stickers, and script pages throughout. It reminds me of the "Star Wars Vault," though less extensive.

The story of Vader includes his initial incarnations, the evolultion of his character, and the casting and development of the young Anakin. It even includes the backstory behind the ostracization of David Prowse. Until now, I've only read innuendos.

Included are details about merchandising and toys, but that did not interest me nearly as much as the photos, inserts, and Vader's story itself.

This is a book that is sure to please the adult Star Wars fan. I am happy to add it to my collection.
