Where are they?

Is Lord Lucan still alive? What happened to the crew of the Mary Celeste? Where is Boudicca buried? In this handsomely illustrated volume the author describes some of the great and not so great missing people, places and things of history. Each entry is short and the author describes the mystery and proposed solutions. Except to rule out the unlikiest solutions, Mr. Smith generally does not try to solve the mysteries. Nevertheless, this is an entertaining book that may encourage you to look for more detailed accounts of some of the missing.

This is a good guide for parents to discuss with their teens and how to use technology wisely and protect themselves from online predators, using the information that find wisely and learn what to put online and how to instill in them the value of human contact without technology.

I recommend this book to anyone who feels that technology is taking over their lives. The tips are helpful and the author directs the reader to websites that can help make the transition easier.

Boundaries in an Overconnected World by Anne Katherine is a book written for anyone who uses an electronic device. It helps the user of these products set limits and get back the time that these electronics take away from real life experiences.

Boundaries in an Overconnected World is a book that should be read by everyone who uses electronics. Smartphones, tablets, and computers are great devices. I use them all, too. However, I know how to interact with people and not be connected to it at all times. What I have personally seen happening with smartphones is a bit crazy. People prefer to be using those instead of interacting with others who they are actually with in real life. Personally, I’d rather be talking with someone next to me, instead of typing a text to someone else. That text can happen later, you know?

I’ve also seen the ridiculous use of oversharing on social networks. Seeing what someone is doing at every part of the day, including the pictures of the meal they are eating, or the random thought they are having is not necessary. I don’t care, and I seriously doubt anyone else does either.

Boundaries in this overconnected world need to be learned and maintained. This book really helps with just about every type of electronic situation that you could encounter, even online dating. Anne Katherine also has very helpful (and safe) tips on this as well.

Overall, this is an excellent book that should be read by everyone in this day and age. I highly recommend it!

Ruminations is an oustanding book. Where there is no vision...."the people will perish." Kris gives us his vision, inspires us to awaken our own vision, and encourages us to continually increase our awareness and personal power. It's amazing that so few people realize that thought, word, and action are the fundamental tools we use to create our own unique destiny. He has been telling us this for years, as have many other great Teachers! When ya'll gonna listen!! Simple universal truths consistently applied is all we need to advance as people regardless of our differences. Most people are not able to apply this vision in their daily lives because of laziness, fear, and social conditioning. Heroes have discipline. The clarity in this book is phenomenal. For those of you who are searching for a way to liberate your soul...to express your Self and be your Self..this book will help you in your journey. Many people in our society are living day to day in a life of reaction, a life they hate, a life they never planned for, yet fell victim to someone elses plan. The spoken word pieces, message from Cornell West, and Hiphop lectures on the CD are an excellent addition to the book. Of course, Kris eloquently illuminates our artform of Hiphop, our strategy to break the chains of mental slavery, free our minds, and evolve into civilized human beings because after all: We decide what Hiphop is and what it isn't, not anyone else.

The best book I've ever read

I just finished what may be one of the most important and
impressive books I've ever read, "Ruminations" by KRS ONE.
When it finally arrived in the mail I was very excited to read
it, I'm one of KRS' biggest fans and think it is criminal just
how unappreciated he can be. I believe that he is not only
one of the great minds in hip hop but one of the most brilliant
minds period. As Digital Underground says he deserves some
heartbeat props as I'm sure hundreds of years from now his
groundbreaking and progressive philosophies will be truly
admired.
Although I've only read the book through once so far and
realize I will need a few more reads to harvest all the jewels I
can say already that this is a book that should be read by all.
I wasn't quite expecting what I got, even Tavis Smiley who
does the introduction was saying how he was blown away
by what KRS offers. The book is not anecdotal at all, it is
pretty much packed with idea after idea and is very scholarly
and serious. Don't expect an autobiography or a conversational
as-told-to book, there are funny and light moments but KRS
is really looking to inspire and provoke here rather than to
entertain.
The first part of the book and my favourite is titled Urban
Inspirational Metaphysics and includes some hardcore
philosophy teachings. He's really outlining how he thinks
we can be better people and what we need to learn and
unlearn in order to get there. There is then a big section
on the reparations issue, then one chapter each on history,
language, voting, September 11th, and then two on hip
hop. You could actually be forgiven for forgetting that KRS
is an emcee for the first three quarters of the book. The
title Ruminations is really appropriate because it is truly
KRS the philospher/theologian/motivational speaker/activist/
deep thinker speaking his mind on various issues, not just
the rapper.
The book isn't perfect. I would have welcomed a bit more
humour at times, the last chapter is actually almost his whole
first book "The Science of Rap" from 1995 reprinted. That isn't
really a problem though since it wasn't a widely distributed
book so I'm sure it will be seen for the first time by most.
Also, when discussing the self KRS is a stauch believer in mind
over matter. I think with all the recent scientific evidence
coming out about the overwhelming role genes and physiology play
in a lot of human behaviour that it would have been nice if he
dealt with that to a degree.
Bottome line, what this book will make you do is think, KRS
likes to think outside the box, make you see things in a new way.
He's a visionary and an idealist who sees the vastness of human
and societal potential and is not satisfied until that potential
is reached. As KRS said on Sex and Violence "If there's one
thing I know, if there's one thing I know, it's that the truth
can always be questioned" The perspectives offered by
Ruminations are guaranteed to shake up some of your old truths.
There's also a CD that comes with the book which includes an
intro from Dr. Cornel West and pieces of KRS lectures and some
spoken word poetry. Beautiful stuff, the more people who I
imagine being exposed to this book the more optimistic I feel
about my own future, my future as a citizen and ultimately
the future of humanity, it really is that good.

Set mostly in the years 1767-1770 but with some scenes in the "present" (the late 1960s), this fantasy features 20th-century Englishwoman Claire and her 18th-century Scottish husband, Jamie, who struggle to set up a home in the wilds of the American South. Their grown daughter, Brianna, comes from the present to seek her parents and is followed by her would-be lover, Roger. In a work that will be eagerly sought by readers of her previous novels, Gabaldon continues to explore the themes of love, marriage, and family through time. Though reading the entire series would be best, first-time readers can generally follow with a minimum of confusion. Another great book in this series!

This is the fourth book in the series, and like the first three, it is really very good. Even though it is long, the pace is quite steady. There are a few slow parts but that's how life goes, I guess. I don't want to give anything away with the book; if you want that, just read some of the other reviews. I just want to give a personal review of the story.

If you haven't read any of the other books, you really should start from the beginning because you will be lost with characters and plots if you start out with this book. As with the other books, there are quite a bit of romance scenes as well as violence. It was a violent time and the author describes that in detail. The medical parts made me a bit nauseated too but that might not bother most people. All in all, this is a very good book. The characters are likeable and the dialogue and banter is quite funny at times. Even though I really liked this book, I didn't love it, so that explains the 4 stars instead of 5.

Outlander goes to America as colonists

The fourth book of the Outlander series chronicles the Frasier family's migration from South Carolina shores to the Cape Fear area of North Carolina where they tell the more general story of Scottish Highlanders trials as citizens of the colonies the decade before the American Revolution. Gabaldon's rigorous adherence to historical record gives the reader a view of a little known story of a major ethnic (Scottish clans) impact on the mountain regions that were known then as the western frontier. Since this is familiar geography for me, I delighted in feeling like I was there, back in time and struggling along with the Frasiers who may have been ancestors of mine. Gabaldon dishes out her usual fare of erotic romance between the middle aged Jamie and Clair Fraser with attention to gritty details that makes the romance all the more intimate. Along the way we see how they perceive slavery, the effects of English management of the colonies that set the stage for the revolution and enjoy a heck of a good story.

An emotional attachment at this point

I have to say that at this point I have such an emotional attachment to the characters I can not help but enjoy their story, but I must say that they are all just some of the most unlucky while fortunate and tragic people I have read a story about. I dare say that if most people of this time period lived in such dire circumstances with so many, almost daily life threatening events I would rather doubt as many of our ancestors would have survived to perpetuate our lineage. By giving all accounts of nearly every tragedy that could occur at that time happening to one small family of people is historically informative and makes me somewhat numb; to feel like, "oh no, here we go again". I sit on the fence as to whether to give it 3 or 4 stars but I am imagining that if you have delved this far into the series you will want to continue the saga of Jamie and Claire et al and understand their form of tragic luck that is the bones of their story, and thus I give it four with hesitation.

In this volume Maharishi presents the Science of Being as the systematic investigation into the ultimate reality of the universe. Like other sciences it begins its investigation from the gross, obvious level of life, and delves more deeply into the subtle levels of the experience of Nature. The Science of Being, however, eventually transcends these subtle regions, and reaches the transcendental field of eternal Being.

At the time this volume was written, modern science had not yet glimpsed the existence of a single universal field at the basis of all natural phenomena, even though the discovery of this Unified Field of Natural Law had been Einstein’s final scientific quest some decades before. By the 1990s, however, the Unified Field of Natural Law had become the greatest focus of theoretical physics, and modern science may now be said to have glimpsed the field of transcendental pure Being.

But this book is still far ahead of the objective traditions of modern scientific inquiry in one crucial sense: to modern science, the theory of the Unified Field of Natural Law is a mathematical abstraction—beautiful and profound, but irrelevant to practical life. To Maharishi and the Vedic Tradition, the experience of Being, Pure Consciousness—the Unified Field of Natural Law—is the most practical and useful experience in daily life that one can have. It is relevant to practical life because it is completely easy for any human being anywhere in the world to have access to pure Being, and utilize the unlimited potential of Being to make daily life joyful and successful. This is achieved effortlessly through the twice-daily practice of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation technique.

Straddling the fence? Read this...

After the persistent urging of a friend (for over 2 years), I tried reading this book. I made it through about 3 chapters before realizing that to really UNDERSTAND I must EXPERIENCE; so I just paid the money (the fee was $1000 but is less now) and learned the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique.
You will not find any instruction on the "how to" of Transcendental Meditation in any book. The TM technique is an oral tradition and requires one-on-one instruction.
The important thing I want to relay to readers is that most anyone can INTELLECTUALIZE the concepts within this book; but with the EXPERIENCE from a routine TM practice--you will really UNDERSTAND the concepts and incorporate them (and the benefits) into your life without effort.
Before learning the TM technique, this book was interesting to read and talked of "pie in the sky" stuff about WHAT and WHO we humans are; but after learning TM, I generally seemed to have an innate understanding / realization of the message being portrayed.
With or without TM, I recommend this book; however, I am glad I had a persistent friend because I originally thought the whole thing to be crazy and crazy expensive! If you are "straddling the fence" or searching for a better life, read this book to get concise information that you need to make your own decisions about TM.
If you want testimonials, read other books. This book is all meat. TM gives you teeth.

A book which answered many questions which pondered in my mind, and gave me the realization that life IS bliss, and that suffering is foreign to life - A beautifully written book which provides a logical and deep insight into the mechanics of life, and evolution. A must for those already practicing Transcendental Meditation (TM), and also an excellent source for those interested in learning more about it.

I would reccomend this book to anyone looking for answers to life, the universe, and everything in it. I read this book after I learned the Transcendental Meditation(TM) technique, and it brought a fullness, and an intellectual understanding that satisfied my need to live life in harmony with the laws of nature. Although it's expensive to learn, the benefits I have gained through praticing TM are enormously rewarding. TM gives the basis from which to act, and The Science of Being and Art of Living gives the guidelines to live life in the most fulfilling way possible.
