The definitive companion to music theatre writing

LYRICS by Oscar Hammerstein II remains the definitive manual for anyone writing lyrics for the music theatre. This update with new lyrics and forward by the author and preface by Steven Sondheim is the classic companion to Lehman Engel's book on the making of a musical. And no matter how far we look there will never be a better source for what works in the theatre. Mr. Hammerstein's lyrics remain the quintessential guide to writers, young and old alike, writing for characters on the stage. God bless Oscar!

short but sweet

I was both pleased and a little disappointed with this book. Oscar Hammerstein, II, was one of the greatest lyricists of our time, and others have said that his words inspired Richard Rodgers to write some of his most soaring melodies. Hammerstein was gracious in sharing many of his experiences honestly with the reader--which many celebrities will not do--and tells very succinctly how to strive for the best lyrics of which you might be capable of achieving.
The book, edited by his son, lists all of his lyrics, written for several different composers. You can learn a lot by reading his words and hearing how he composed them.
I was a bit disappointed, though, that Hammerstein's instructions were only about 50 pages or so. To learn more about songwriting, I have turned to other sources. But, this book is truly a classic and should be in the collection of anyone who admires the highest quality of talent, especially in literature and the theater. I would recommend it to anyone.

If you write lyrics (or just love reading them) this is a fascinating read. It's much more than a collection of lyrics, it is the author's commentary on how he went about creating them, plus his views on what makes good lyric-writing and what does not. A little gem, this book is.

In his fourth alternate history, Tsouras (Disaster at D-Day, etc.), a senior analyst of the U.S. Army National Ground Intelligence Center, brings together a number of experts in the Pacific war to show how, with only some minor adjustments to actual events, the Japanese could have either won the war in the Pacific or else so stymied the Allies that Japan would have been able to keep some of its early conquests. The 10 chapters by 10 authors cover the gamut from an early conflict between Japan and the Soviet Union to the invasion of Japan. When American planes low on fuel had a choice while searching for the Japanese carriers at Midway, what if their commander had decided to fly to Midway to refuel rather than continue toward the last reported position of the enemy? (All three American carriers might have been sunk and the Japanese would have gone on to neutralize Hawaii and move in on the U.S. West Coast from there.) Other scenarios include a Japanese invasion of Australia (which is eventually defeated), a thrust into British India, an American evacuation of Guadalcanal, a disaster at Leyte Gulf and heavy losses during the invasion of Japan. Complementing 24 illustrations (not seen by PW) and 15 maps scattered throughout, brief summaries at the end of each chapter inform readers of what actually happened most will be relieved. An excellent start with a soviet/japanese conflict, though i thought the war plan orange was a bit lacking.The last chapter - a debrief/lecture with Admiral Fletcher is really a superb construct, catching the politics, tactics and strategy of the final closing months of the Pacific War. --By Richard

Some premises solid, logical.

Some far fetched.

All " chapters " display author's grasp & understanding of what occurred & what could have happened.

Difficulty with " Alternative History ", is that there is so much room for debate.

However, the most important factor is entertainment.

Was it entertaining?

Did it stimulate you?

Did it make you think?

The answer is YES.

I give " Rising Sun Victorious " five stars, out of five stars.

Each chapter was about 30 pages, written by a different author with a different take on an alternative history of WWII. Very entertaining and well thought out. I read it over a period of several weeks between other books and very much enjoyed it.

The What-Ifs of WWII...

The subtitle says the alternate history of how the Japanese won the Pacific War which is not totally true. While many of the chapters deal with their alternate choices, and sometimes just plain good luck, at Pearl Harbor and Midway not all the new pathways have Japan winning the war. Many of the authors are just too honest and some of the end results, while interesting and dramatic, don't bring the Japanese victory. Sometimes it seems to bring them even faster to defeat and death.

The way that the Sidemen wrote this book is exactly like how they collaborate in a Sidemen video, which is really funny, and that's why I'm such a big fan of them. I'm really impressed by the way they present their contents, using the 'Sidemen way'.

As textbooks go, its not bad...

Textbooks are inherently flawed. I do not like them. Nevertheless, they seem necessary. As textbooks go, this one is fairly good. It presents opposing viewpoints on various complex and contested issues that affect Africans and Africa. Topics range from excision (female circumcision) to economic development to the origins of corruption. It is good for giving American students, who are generally thoroughly ignorant about Africa (well what do you expect when their vision of Africa comes from Disney's "The Lion King"...), some insight into the complexity of this immense continent.

On the positive side, the "articles" or viewpoints are written by recognized experts who are able to highlight some of the major arguments for or against a position in a relatively concise manner. The book also has an introduction and historical overview that situates the "problems" it explores. I would also note that it includes with every debate a list of further resources.

On the negative side, it is "problem" focused so it tends to reinforce the already-existing stereotype prevalent in the US and the West in general that Africa is a "problem" and one that has to be resolved by outsiders. Also, although the contributors are, without question, experts in the field(s) of African studies, very few of them are Africans (I am not African and I teach African studies, but it is nice to have a bit of balance).

I would not base my entire class upon this book. I use it with one or two other texts and with a number of films (African films) in my classes. However, used in that context, it has been effective at generating discussion and debate and in getting students to understand that contemporary Africa is not what most American students think it is, that Africans do not conform to the stereotypes that the American media creates of them, and that the problems that face Africa and Africans are sufficiently complex that they cannot be quickly and easily resolved (if they could be, Africans would have resolved them).

Interesting and Insightful

Being a Nigerian I was interested in REALLY learning about the issues that infest such a beautiful country. It opened my eyes to not only the goverment problems but problems about diamond mines, and other natural resources that Africa is abundant on yet fails to regulate successfully. The book has the YES/NO views on every topic from the French colonization, to China's investment in Africa. It is an easy read for college students and even more easy to use as a guide for Argumentative papers.

shabby rehash of 2011 version, also out of date already since 2012

Many things have changed in Myanmar since so called "Democracy" and since the 2010 elections many places have been opened up to travellers and tourists previously inaccessible before 2012 (unless with expensive govt guide driver and permits etc,) as the country suddenly filled with tourists who previously would not go because of UN sanctions etc , However the NEW 2014 lonely planet guide is just a rehash of the poorly updated 2011 version and a shameful discredit to its author Simon Richmonds reputation . Burma /Myanmar is now become open to backpackers ie overland entry and exit via Kawthung and Maesot . Also overland exit via chin district to India previously unattainable by local bus. Also Mrauk is now accessible by local bus via Ann denied previously. All these points have been igbnored and overlooked in this allegedly updated version and backpackers are still recommended in the guide to follow old prior to democracy routes ie flying and long boat journeys. The book glosses over the plight and genocide of the Rohyngha and is at best just a rehash of the very poor 2011 version. Lonelyplanet and the author Simon Richmond should be ashamed of their lack of principles and efforts in areas where the backpacker will be dissappointed if he/she takes their advice on areas they suggest ie ‘still you can only fly’, whereas those of us who love Myanmar and its people grab these opportunities to head into previously uncharted territory whilst this guide book and its lack of research by the author shows disresepct for those backpackers who are its target, although I personally think its aimed at upmarket accommodation for the "Flashpacker" (see kalow) and yet still sends the naive and trusting backpacker into places noted for their cheating tourists, like Golden Lilly in Kalow etc It lacks research and also lacks important changes in travel within Myanmar as with Mrauk U chin state and Myiktyna etc etc although with hindsight it took 7 years for them to acknowledge Sein Sein in Bhamo as best restaurant, something Stefan loose guide book on Myanmar acknowledged years before and I personally found by accident . Sorry but out of date and disrespectful to those who want a valuable updated guide to this beautiful country. Suggest Lonely planet do a recall and properly update the important changes before the release of the paper back version this month until then use other sources or second hand older version

Lacking in breadth and depth, but Ok for the casual/first time visitor.

While I didn't expect it to have the same breadth of regions/sights as say, Thailand. I was also disappointed with the depth of those areas that are covered.
I'm a frequent traveller to Myanmar and have found both this and the 2 previous editions only semi-useful. This most recent edition definitely feels like it was thrown together just so they could say that they had made an update. Other than a few newer hotels in major destinations, there wasn't that much else put in it seems.
Having said that, if your're just going to the main tourist areas such as Bagan, Inle, Yangon, etc, this will provide you with plenty of things to see and places to stay. If you're really wanting to scratch beneath the surface and get off the beaten track, you're much better off speaking with the undeniably friendly and helpful locals.

The Best Available...Though Far from Great

Certainly more useful than any other book out there, but Lonely Planet continues to disappoint. Chapters are arranged in illogical order, map legends appear on the pages after the map and someone needs to seriously vet the "highlighted" hotels and restaurants. I found many superior lodgings and eateries with better prices just by walking the streets for a few minutes. I long for the days when Rough Guides regularly published guides in book format, but until they return, Lonely Planet is your best bet. Indispensable if you are travelling independently to Myanmar.

Solid Research But E-Book Formatting Problems

This is an excellent study, and I recommend it to anyone interested in a serious examination of this period in Breton history and the Angevins' role in it. I was particularly impressed by the detailed discussions about the background of Henry II's intervention in Breton affairs, the reign of Duke Geoffrey, and the complex feudal relationships between the Breton nobles and the Plantagenets as rulers of Anjou and Normandy. I found, however, succession crisis at the time of John's accession and the disappearance of Duke Arthur I were passed over too briefly in comparison, and I wished there had been the same careful analysis of these episodes. The appendices at the end are very useful.
My chief reservation with this book concerns not the contents but the conversion to the electronic format. The typeface looks a bit faded as if it had been produced by a printer running out of ink, and so it is not as clear as it should be on the electronic paper, especially since a very small font is used in the notes. Words and even individual letters like the capital D are split in the middle for no reason, which means that word searches miss examples. The dates are spaced erratically. In some parts of the book the footnote numbers are linked to the notes, but in other parts the numbers are not only not linked, but they even are split up and attached to words in different lines, apparently at random, so it is necessary to search through the notes at the back, a frustrating process because they are out of order. Even one of the links in the table of contents does not work. This is an expensive e-book and it was worth the money for me, but I was very disappointed that the conversion was not done more carefully.

Clare B. HOPE AND OTHER LUXURIES is important, informative and provocative

With HOPE AND OTHER LUXURIES, successful YA novelist Clare B. Dunkle joins a long line of celebrities, including journalist Marya Hornbacher and actor Portia de Rossi, who have shared their physically painful and emotionally tumultuous experiences with eating disorders.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual V (DSM-V) --- essentially the psychologist’s handbook --- defines several “feeding and eating disorders,” all of which are marked by persistent and harmful deviations from what we define as normal eating patterns. To date, researchers have yet to discover a definitive reason for why and how these disorders develop. As far as we know, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia tend to primarily affect women, and often occur in response to a traumatic event (e.g., rape, sexual assault, divorce). The symptoms that arise include severe food restricting, binging and purging, or excessive exercise, and function to exert control in an uncontrollable world, meet media-propagated beauty standards or dampen intense negative emotions --- and sometimes to deal with all three.

Unlike Hornbacher and de Rossi, Dunkle offers a fairly unique perspective in the eating disorders memoir literature by providing a voice for the family members who suffer alongside their ill relatives. Perhaps unintentionally, her book is coming out at a time when family-based treatment is becoming increasingly popular among eating disorder researchers and clinicians. The Maudsley Method, a recent but widely used type of treatment, attempts to instruct families how to help their adolescents with anorexia by encouraging them to normalize their weight and eating patterns. Psychologists, however, have yet to pay adequate attention to the emotional and psychological experiences of patients’ loved ones. Dunkle provides them with a voice.

In HOPE AND OTHER LUXURIES, Dunkle shares her experiences raising her daughter Elena, who struggles with anorexia during her adolescent years. Dunkle, her husband Joe, and their two daughters move from their home state of Texas to Germany, where Elena and her sister initially flourish in an all-girls boarding school. The young Elena is described as an enthusiastic go-getter. She takes delight in telling her mom fantastical stories and fighting for the bullied, underserved and ill. But suddenly, Elena loses her zest for life. She holes up in her room, sleeps all day, and snaps at her family members when they try to connect with her.

Although Dunkle had some prior experience with mental health and the treatment system --- her other daughter, Valerie, attempted suicide prior to the onset of Elena’s eating disorder --- she spends the majority of the book describing her struggles both accepting Elena’s diagnosis and getting her the treatment she so desperately needs. Their first encounter with an eating disorder treatment provider, Dr. Petras, did not augur well for the rest of their experiences. Although the doctor aptly diagnosed Elena with anorexia nervosa, his abrasive delivery, in addition to mixed messages from subsequent treatment providers, encouraged Dunkle to fight against Elena’s diagnosis. Elena, who also resisted the term, eventually tells her mother about the traumas she had experienced prior to exhibiting symptoms of the disorder. While away at boarding school, she was raped at the tragically young age of 13. Later, she suffered an unrelated miscarriage.

Finally, Dunkle begins to understand what Elena had really been through. I don’t say this to blame Dunkle for misunderstanding. The scarcity of information about, and funded treatment for, eating disorders is criminal. Dunkle’s admission that she had incomplete understanding of her daughter’s illness is powerful and brave. Undeserved self-blame and guilt on the part of parents of the mentally ill is common, yet there are few who are willing to tell their stories for the benefit of others as Dunkle does here.

Dunkle also highlights the inadequacy of treatment for eating disorders and, frankly, all mental health issues in this country. Elena bounces from program to program, where many of her providers are not versed in eating disorder symptomatology or treatment. When Dunkle is able to find a specialized program for Elena, her insurance cuts her off as soon as she starts making progress. She describes her tedious and often expensive process in navigating the medical insurance system, and determines that when it comes down to it, our insurance system is more concerned with money than health.

Dunkle brings up several important points about the emotional, interpersonal and monetary costs of living with someone afflicted with an eating disorder. Her book, however, suffers somewhat from a lack of editing. Clocking in at a whopping 557 pages, it can feel more like an emotional exorcism than a memoir. Throughout, she weaves in excerpts from her YA novels, attempting to give readers insight into how her struggles with Elena influenced her writing. The impulse is understandable --- art imitates life, and vice versa --- but reading about her writing process felt exhausting at times.

Overall, HOPE AND OTHER LUXURIES is important, informative and provocative. I hope that Dunkle’s story will inspire others who love those suffering from mental illness to speak up about their experiences. Only with awareness and understanding can we achieve better treatment for ourselves and our loved ones.

A journey through hell

The subtitle tells it all: a mother's life with a daughter's anorexia. We hear so much about the hell that people with anorexia suffer, but we don't always hear how the families suffer as well. From the initial shock of hearing that Elena was anorexic to battling both insurance companies and a medical system that seemed stacked against recovery, Clare take her readers on a journey with twists and turns, highs and lows, and the complicated emotions she realizes that every time Elena seems to be getting better, another ax falls to smash their happiness.

If you want to read how anorexia impacts those around the sufferer, read this book.

At times, painful to read but at the same time hard to put down

While this memoir was painful to read at times, it was very compelling and hard to put down. Claire is an excellent writer who describes every situation in a way that makes you feel like you are there living it too. The story is very real and raw, and any mother who has raised children can empathize with the roller coaster emotions that Claire goes through with her daughter's diagnosis, treatment, and subsequent recovery. I read both Claire's and Elena's memoirs and enjoyed them very much. I would like to read more of Claire's books, but I am not a huge fan of the fantasy genre. I hope she considers writing more real life stories.

About the Author

Mike Sullivan is a Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University and received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike has taught at Chicago State for over 30 years and has authored or co-authored over fifty books. Mike has four children, all of whom are involved with mathematics or publishing: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Mike III, who co-authors this series and teaches college mathematics; Dan, who is a Pearson Education sales representative; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school mathematics. When he's not writing, Mike enjoys gardening or spending time with his family, including nine grandchildren.

Mike Sullivan III is a professor of mathematics at Joliet Junior College. He holds graduate degrees from DePaul University in both mathematics and economics. Mike is an author or co-author on more than 20 books, including a statistics book and a developmental mathematics series. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer who tries to spend as much of his limited free time as possible on the golf course.

Horrid book

If you're going to be using this book on MyMathLab/MathXL then take my advice - don't waste any more money to buy the book. The entirety of the book is available as an ebook included with your subscription code.

This book is a heavy, huge waste of space. There is little to be learned from the book, as it is essentially a massive topic outline with an occasional example and copious self-assessment type questions. The questions which appear at the end of every section are page fillers - most of the work you do on an online class will render all those questions dead space. The online "View an Example" button is (in the absence of a good teacher/tutor) the only thing that teaches you how to do a problem, which shows you step by step (most of the time) how to solve that type of problem. Occasionally, you'll be quizzed on something that is not explained in the book - or explained in such a high level that no solution can be derived that will help you in practice. The answers to all the hundreds of pages of questions are not explained, only given. This leads me to believe that those working purely from the book without an online component are just as, if not worse off, than the online folks.

Students will have little choice in the selection of this book - it is my hope that teachers will see these reviews and choose a more helpful book. If all you care about as a teacher is hitting topic points, this book will make that painfully clear, but it will do your students no service as a learning tool. At the very least, make the book optional where online access applies.

Lastly, if you are considering the loose leaf book, stop considering. The book is useless enough as it is, but the ultimate price of saving the few bucks in binding is that loose leaf has literally no resale value. This will make you likely ineligible for book buyback and selling online is risky since nobody knows what pages may or may not be missing or what condition they're in after not having a binding. If you simply must have this book, look to a bound or electronic rental where applicable. This is one of those cases where nearly any price of rental below selling price will be a worthwhile transaction.

A great reference

I wish some of the examples were a little clearer in this book, but let's face it. You HAVE to buy this book for your math class. I think it's a good book because of it's breadth. Many topics are covered so I imagine it will be quite useful to look back over during my next few semesters in calculus.
