In October 1962, at the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union came to the brink of nuclear conflict over the placement of Soviet missiles in Cuba. In this hour-by-hour chronicle of those tense days, veteran Washington Post reporter Michael Dobbs reveals just how close we came to Armageddon. Here, for the first time, are gripping accounts of Khrushchev's plan to destroy the U.S. naval base at Guantánamo; the handling of Soviet nuclear warheads on Cuba; and the extraordinary story of a U-2 spy plane that got lost over Russia at the peak of the crisis.

Drugs and the Brain (Scientific American Library), by Solomon H. Snyder

"This is an admirable book. With his background in psychiatry and neuropharmacology and with his lively awareness of the history and social relevance of his topic, Snyder is almost uniquely placed to write about this subject. Though by no means the first popular account of neuropharmacology, it is without doubt the best one so far." Times Higher Education Supplement

An objective, well informed look at a culturally taboo topic
By Earl Dennis
Many of the Scientific American Library books are gems and this isosemantically titled book by Dr. Snyder is no exception. The books I have read from this series are uniformly short, sweet and to the point. Drugs, per se, are after all essentially what brain function is. Drugs are our personalities, our emotions (not to mention all other vertebrates, especially the class of mammals to which we belong). There is no better way to come to understand psychology, physiology, the cognitive sciences, and one could argue, metaphysics, than by examining the action of drugs and the brain; the primary distinction being intrinsic, naturally produced drugs as opposed to extrinsic, store (or street) bought ones.
Dr. Snyder runs through the litany of the common classes of drugs: the opiates and their natural countersubstance, the endorphins--the stimulants and their action of dopamine reuptake blockage--the hallucinogens and their concomitant serotonergic pathways--and some of the more popular psychopharmcologicals specific to schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety.
This book is a well written, historically informative, crash course in pharmacology for the lay reader, and remains a valuable reference long after its initial reading.

Psychopharmacology primer for the intelligent reader
By aptowicz@sas.upenn.edu
This book is short, accessible, and fully illustrated. It is a particularly compelling technical primer for the intelligent but non-initiated reader. The logical flow of the book reflects the history of drug use and pharmacology research, both increasing in sophistication over time, and is topically organized by the major classes of psychoactives.
Subjects touched upon include the use of drugs in religious ceremony, Freud's cocain habit, the 60s, and the modern era of specialized mood-altering drugs.
The author is chair of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland and one of the top three most cited scientists in the life science.
It is a pleasure to read, and a springboard for further investigation in the areas of psychopharmacology, neuroscience or psychiatry.

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin, by Erik Larson

Erik Larson, New York Times bestselling author of Devil in the White City, delivers a remarkable story set during Hitler’s rise to power.

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Nazi Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.
A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition.
Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, May 2011: In the Garden of Beasts is a vivid portrait of Berlin during the first years of Hitler’s reign, brought to life through the stories of two people: William E. Dodd, who in 1933 became America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s regime, and his scandalously carefree daughter, Martha. Ambassador Dodd, an unassuming and scholarly man, is an odd fit among the extravagance of the Nazi elite. His frugality annoys his fellow Americans in the State Department and Dodd’s growing misgivings about Hitler’s ambitions fall on deaf ears among his peers, who are content to “give Hitler everything he wants.” Martha, on the other hand, is mesmerized by the glamorous parties and the high-minded conversation of Berlin’s salon society—and flings herself headlong into numerous affairs with the city’s elite, most notably the head of the Gestapo and a Soviet spy. Both become players in the exhilarating (and terrifying) story of Hitler’s obsession for absolute power, which culminates in the events of one murderous night, later known as “the Night of Long Knives.” The rise of Nazi Germany is a well-chronicled time in history, which makes In the Garden of Beasts all the more remarkable. Erik Larson has crafted a gripping, deeply-intimate narrative with a climax that reads like the best political thriller, where we are stunned with each turn of the page, even though we already know the outcome. --Shane Hansanuwat

Review
"By far his best and most enthralling work of novelistic history….There has been nothing quite like Mr. Larson’s story of the four Dodds….The Dodd’s story is rich with incident, populated by fascinating secondary characters, tinged with rising peril and pityingly persuasive about the futility of Dodd’s mission....powerful, poignant…a transportingly true story."--The New York Times

The evil that men do
By Chris Swanson
It has been observed that for evil to win all that needs happen is for good men to do nothing. That was what the United States government did, at least officially, for much of the lead-up to World War II. Too often chances to speak out and try to stop the madness that was engulfing Germany were ignored. Too frequently the atrocities were overlooked. Too many times our response to the crisis over there was nothing, nothing, nothing...

But there were exceptions. George Messersmith, who worked at the Berlin embassy, was one of those who tried, often in vain, to bring about some change in the US policies, though he was often ignored as having too vivid of an imagination. So, too, were various Jewish groups in the USA, though they were often ignored for being Jewish. And, eventually, so did William Dodd, the United States ambassador to Germany, though he was ignored because, frankly, too many people didn't want to believe any of what was happening in Berlin.

Before reading this book I had a slightly better than average knowledge of the history of World War II and what led up to it. But even for me there were things to learn. I'd never heard of Dodd or Messersmith. Never heard of Rudolph Diels, or Ernst Hanfstaengl. I knew, at least a bit, about the Night of Long Knives and some what lead up to it, including Ernst Rohm's penchant for pretty young men, but I didn't really grasp much of what was going on that led up to it.

Now, thanks to Erik Larson's latest work, I know these people and I have a much, much improved understanding of what was going on in Germany from 1933 to 1938. Larson gives you a great "on the ground" view of what was really happening, what people thought was happening, what everyone said was happening and why the differences between these things matter. You really get a feel for how Berlin functioned, or didn't function, during this time period.

Larson's previous work, Thunderstruck, where he tried too hard to link the stories of Dr Crippen and Marconi, didn't really work for me, which was a disappointment, since The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America remains one of my favorite books. I'm happy to say this book is at least as good and engaging as "Devil in the White City". This is an excellent, well-written, suspenseful book. Even though I did know the fates of some of the people involved, Larson's writing was still engaging enough to keep me interested, and to occasionally make me wonder if my memory of their lives was wrong (it wasn't).

Anyone with even a casual interest in the events leading up to the war will find this an invaluable read. It's easily the best book I've read this year, and likely to stay that way. A truly wonderful read!

Another telling work by Erik Larson
By Steven Peterson
This is the fourth book written by Erik Larson that I have read. In my view, this quartet is a pretty powerful body of work: The Devil in the White City, Thunderstruck, and Isaac's Storm)--and now In the Garden of Beasts. As with Larson's other works, there are several layers to this work. Larson begins by noting that (Page xiv): "This is a work of nonfiction."

At one level, this is a portrayal of a family. Key characters are William Dodd, an academic desperate to write a book on the South who finds himself oddly enough tapped to become the American Ambassador to Germany in the very early years of Hitler's rule of the country. There is also considerable detail given to Dodd's daughter, Martha. She was coming off a failed marriage and she (and her brother and William's wife) accompanied Dodd in his service in Germany.

At another level, the book is about the gathering horror of the Third Reich. Sometimes, Germany seems like a modern, civilized country. At other times, though, the darkness of Nazism manifests itself. One small vignette: H. V. Kaltenborn's advocacy of Germany--and his family's terror at a Hitler demonstration where they were frightened by thugs for not carrying out the German salute with the arm. Other small incidents that portend what is to come pop up over the course of the work, providing a dark backdrop to the surface story.

We see Dodd's interaction with key leaders such as Goebbels and Goring. We read of him trying to protect American interests while becoming concerned about what was happening in Germany. And seeing how his superiors did not want to hear negative reports from him. His daughter? She enjoyed her freedom with a series of romances--including with the famous World War I pilot, Udet, and--extraordinarily enough--the head of the Gestapo, Diels .

There is tautness to the work, as it moves toward its climax with the Night of the Long Knives. The book closes out with Dodd and his family's return to the US and events that took place thereafter.

Another wonderful work by Erik Larson.

History as a novelist might present it.
By Jill Meyer
Erik Larson is not a novelist but his books on historical subjects are as beautifully written as if a novelist had written them. He has written about Chicago and the 1893 World's Fair, a terrible hurricane in Galveston, Texas, and a doctor/murderer in London. In all his books, he juxtaposes two events or characters and flits between the two. In this book, "In the Garden of Beasts", he presents the Dodd family of four in 1933 and the growing menace of Hitler and the Nazi party. It's brilliant writing at its best.

William Dodd was a professor at the University of Chicago and a product of a southern upbringing. He was mild-mannered and subtle, but fairly ambitious, career-wise. As a self-described "Jeffersonian Democrat", Dodd had come to the attention of newly-inaugurated Franklin Roosevelt in 1933 when Roosevelt and his State Department were looking for a new US ambassador to Germany. Adolf Hitler had come to power in Germany at about the same time as Roosevelt in the United States. Both faced Depression-wracked countries and both set about helping to heal the economic woes. Hitler's plans were much more ambitious at that point; getting out of the Versailles Treaty restrictions and cleansing Germany of her Jewish population were also on the agenda. Roosevelt's appointment of William Dodd as the United States Ambassador to Germany brought many questions from old diplomatic "hands" at the State Department as well as among Roosevelt's aides. Was Dodd "tough" enough to deal with Hitler? And, what WAS "tough enough" in dealing with Hitler and the growing German menace? And, what WAS the "growing German menace"? Lots of questions in 1933 wouldn't be answered until later; later, after "The Night of Long Knives", "Krystalnach", and the whole bloody butchery of WW2.

Dodd brought with him to Berlin in 1933 his wife, and two grown children, Martha and Bill, Jr. It was Martha - then aged 22 and full of life and with a secret, soon-to-be-divorced husband back home - who flirted with both the night-life and the political intrigue of Berlin. She landed in exalted circles - both artistic and political - and lead a rather exhausting love life with Germans, Americans, and Russians.

Life in Berlin in 1933 was easy-going, but still "edgy" as Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party fought for a political future. President Hindenburg was still alive and Hitler was his Chancellor. He was still not in command and would not be so until Hindenburg's death nearly a year later. Hitler was also fighting within his own ranks. His old comrade, Ernst Rohm, led the SA and it was a threat to Hitler. "The Night of Long Knives", in 1934, was the coup staged by Hitler as he got rid of Rohm and a lot of other political enemies. William Dodd, sickened by the violence and the knowledge that Hitler was on the road to world-power, began to speak out firmly about the Nazi regime and the threat it posed.

"In the Garden" is a masterpiece of writing for those interested in the subject. His book, "Devil in the White City", with its story of Chicago and a mass-murderer, might have appealed more to a wider audience, but this book is wonderful for the history buffs among us. I also appreciate the sources he lists at the end of the book.

Poorly written, no editing, very tedious read
By G O.
The author(s) appear to be non-native English speakers, and their word usage, punctuation, and grammar are atrocious. It appears that the book was not professionally edited, and the errors are myriad - making the book extremely difficult to read.

The author's style is terse and repetitive. Every function is described exactly the same way, English mistakes and all. It's as if a template was written first, and then the details for each function inserted. Reading the book is very tedious.

From a content perspective, I would categorize the book as a reference, not a beginner's guide. How to use each function is well covered, but there is very little on why. As a 2D CAD person trying to learn solid modeling the book will help, but only just barely. I cannot recommend the book to others.

Good value, poor quality.
By Tony J D
Good value, covers lots of material, but the figures for the exercises are small and the dimensions are difficult to read (even with a magnifying glass).

Great Book
By Amazon Customer
I teach SOLIDWORKS and have been using this book since last year. This is the best book that I have found for SOLIDWORKS. It is simple, clear, & easy to understand. Though not perfect, it is easy to follow and is also a great reference book. I liked the way this book is written, the step-by-step instructions and tutorials. The methods and techniques used in creating the models and assemblies are really impressive. A lot of commands and topics are covered which makes this book a must have for beginner and advanced users. I highly recommend this book to all students as well as working professionals. Great Book!

From the Inside Flap
During the late 1920s, Ralph Nelson Elliott theorized that stock markets do not behave in a random, chaotic manner, but rather that they move in repetitive cycles, which reflect the actions and emotions of humans caused by exterior influences or mass psychology. Elliott believed that the ebb and flow of mass psychology reveals itself in the same repetitive patterns––illustrated by recognizable "waves." It was at this point that Elliott Wave theory was born.

Since its discovery, numerous books have tried to capture the essence of this revolutionary forecasting method, but they either made Elliott more complicated than it needed to be, or, in an effort to overcome the perceived complexity of analysis using Elliott, oversimplified the process.

In Applying Elliott Wave Theory Profitably, author and Elliott Wave expert Steven Poser makes sense of this proven trading strategy and gives you the most well-rounded and straightforward lesson on how to make money using Elliott Wave theory. Drawing from his many years of Elliott Wave experience, Poser:

  • Reviews how and why technical analysis works, and shows you where the Elliott Wave theory fits into that picture
  • Reveals each of the basic and advanced patterns that the market might trace out and discusses the market conditions that typically produce these patterns
  • Outlines how to build an efficient trading plan
  • Illustrates how to continuously update your plan in real time as the market provides you with further information by way of a constant stream of prices, volume, and news
  • Examines how to review the market from multiple time frames, so you know what degree of price retracements to expect, as well as what your risks and rewards may be

Filled with in-depth insights, expert advice, and a set of sample trading plans, this book will take you step by step through the process of understanding how and why Elliott Wave theory works––as well as show you when and where you are most likely to profitably apply Elliott Wave to improve your trading. You don’t need to trade every day to gain substantial profits, but when it is time to trade, using Elliott Wave theory can make all the difference.

From the Back Cover
"I have always found Elliott Wave difficult to understand and more difficult to apply, but finally Steve Poser has written a book that makes sense and is born from real experience. This is not Elliott made easy but Elliott that makes sense. Hats off to Poser for creating the book the marketplace has needed for so long."
–Bruce M. Kamich, CMT

Past President of the Market Technicians Association

Well Written
By David Keller
I recently completed the CMT (Chartered Market Technician) exam process- this is a professional exam for technical analysis, consists of three levels. The third level has a substantial section on Elliott Wave. I have read other books on Elliott, but this book was in my opinion the best written. Mr. Poser made a difficult subject much easier to digest. The real strength here is in discussing what NOT to do when using Elliott Wave- by keeping these tips in mind you will find you can readily apply the techniques to charts from various financial markets.

I highly recommend this book to anyone taking the CMT exam, especially those who don't use Elliott Wave in their trading and/or analysis.

Best Elliott Wave book so far
By A Customer
Poser has put together a very good book. He shows you how to use Elliott Wave without turning it into some sort of mystical religion. He does not say that there are times that you cannot trade with Elliott, but he does tell you what to look for when the patterns start to get sloppy. He also shows you how to do your research (and turn it into a trading or investing strategy) and very importantly shows the link between market psychology and the wave patterns. The book also explains how to use Elliott along with technical indicators and classic chart patterns.
No book is perfect, and although Poser does give you detailed trading plans, and also presents some trading tips, I wish he would have made the tips a more consistent feature throughout the book. His clear writing style and clear depth of knowledge makes this an excellent choice for somebody who want to learn how to use Elliott Wave and why it actually works.
In the end, the book is aimed at showing you how to use Elliott to trade, which is why this book is a buy for anybody interested in learning how to use the Elliott Wave Principle in their trading.

Thinking Like a Trader with Elliott Waves
By Donald Mitchell
Having read and reviewed a number of books on Elliott Wave theory, I found this one to be much more helpful to me than any of the others.
I strongly agree with the author that Elliott Waves make more sense when considered in the context of other fundamental and technical information, the business environment, and key social circumstances. I found the way he described how to combine these data to be the most valuable part of the book.
The issue of Elliott Waves or any other technical tool is that it is ambiguous what is going on at any point in time. Even after the fact, many technicians will disagree about what the charts show. So how do you decide what trade to make? This book contains many excellent detailed examples that will help you understand, and gives you a format to follow for the future. The essence is to find potential trades with much more likelihood of gain than loss . . . and a gain potential that is much larger than the loss potential as well. How do to that is well described here for stock indices, stocks, bonds, currencies, and commodities.
What if you just want to better understand Elliott Waves? The book is superb in that dimension, as well. I found that I improved my understanding of how to apply Elliott Waves to stocks by looking at how they work in commodities more than I would ever have simply by looking at lots of stocks.
Mr. Poser is a clear writer. The material is dense though. You are taken through detailed analyses of many charts. These discussions take time to think through, but are rewarding. I recommend reading the book in small bites. I reviewed about 5 pages a day, and found it worked well at that pace.
I especially enjoyed the last chapter where Mr. Poser took a look at what may lie ahead for the stock market.
After you finish this book, you should probably read something by Robert Prechter as well.
After you finish this fine book, I suggest that you look for yet more technical tools to help you understand how to make better investment decisions. If you decide that rapid-fire trading isn't for you (it certainly isn't for me), remember that you can outperform 90% of all investors by putting your money into indexed mutual funds.

Hiding (Religion and Postmodernism), by Mark C. Taylor

The age of information, media, and virtuality is transforming every aspect of human experience. Questions that have long haunted the philosophical imagination are becoming urgent practical concerns: Where does the natural end and the artificial begin? Is there a difference between the material and the immaterial? In his new work, Mark C. Taylor extends his ongoing investigation of postmodern worlds by critically examining a wide range of contemporary cultural practices.

Nothing defines postmodernism so well as its refusal of depth, its emphasis on appearance and spectacle, its tendency to collapse a three-dimensional world in which image and reality are distinct into a two-dimensional world in which they merge. The postmodern world, Taylor argues, is a world of surfaces, and the postmodern condition is one of profound superficiality.

For many cultural commentators, postmodernism's inescapable play of surfaces is cause for despair. Taylor, on the other hand, shows that the disappearance of depth in postmodern culture is actually a liberation repleat with creative possibilities. Taylor introduces readers to a popular culture in which detectives—the postmodern heroes of Paul Auster and Dennis Potter—lift surfaces only to find more surfaces, and in which fashion advertising plays transparency against hiding. Taylor looks at the contemporary preoccupation with body piercing and tattooing, and asks whether these practices actually reveal or conceal. Phrenology and skin diseases, the "religious" architecture of Las Vegas, the limitless spread of computer networks—all are brought within the scope of Taylor's brilliant analysis. Postmodernism, he shows, has given us a new sense of the superficial, one in which the issue is not the absence of meaning but its uncontrollable, ecstatic proliferation.

Embodying the very tendencies it analyzes, Hiding is unique. Conceived and developed with well-known designers Michael Rock and Susan Sellars, this work transgresses the boundary that customarily separates graphic design from the story within a text. The product of nearly three decades of reflection and writing, Hiding opens a window on contemporary culture. To follow the remarkable course Taylor charts is to see both our present and past differently and to encounter a future as disorienting as it is alluring.

Amazon.com Review
"To read this book right, you have to read it wrong," writes Jack Miles in the foreword to Mark C. Taylor's Hiding, the first indication that what lies within is not your typical work of philosophy. Become distracted by its surface charms rather than convinced by its argument, in other words, and you've grasped the author's intent. Hiding aims to seduce as much as convince, Miles writes, and in that aim it succeeds.

A professor at Williams College, Taylor is a truly interdisciplinary thinker whose work draws on theology, art and architecture, linguistics, literary criticism, fashion, technology, and even tattoos. In Hiding, he takes these diverse influences and weaves a virtual web of postmodern delights. Even the book's striking graphic design is part and parcel of Taylor's thought, eliminating the dichotomy between what is said and how it is presented. Indeed, throughout Hiding Taylor explores the hypnotizing play of surfaces that characterizes late-20th-century life, holding that this play leads not to meaninglessness but an infinite expansion of meanings. In his final chapter, he speculates about a possible nontotalizing yet holistic system--a structure he visualizes not as "a universal grid organizing opposites nor a dialectical system synthesizing opposites but a seamy web in which what comes together is held apart and what is held apart comes together...."

Review
A philosopher of religion and technology, Mark C. Taylor means to disabuse us of our archaic notion that what lies beneath the surface is any more significant or real then what rides on the skin of things.... With occasional pages entirely blank or black, text interrupted by drifting quotations and fonts commingled, the book wears its heart on its sleeve, but its sleeves are unhappily short, especially in this era of a thinning ozone layer when we must all cover up. -- The New York Times Book Review, Hillel Schwartz

Nothing defines postmodernism so well as its refusal of depth, its emphasis on appearance and spectacle, and its tendency to collapse a three-dimensional world in which image and reality are distinct into a two-dimensional world in which they merge. Our postmodern world is a world of surfaces and our postmodern condition one of profound superficiality. For Mark C. Taylor, the disappearance of depth we sense all around us is a change full of creative possibility. Taylor introduces us to a popular culture in which detectives - the postmodern heroes of Paul Auster and Dennis Potter - lift surfaces only to find more surfaces, and in which fashion advertising plays transparency against hiding. I first resisted Hiding. I wanted to disapprove of its subject matter (skin, mystery novels, fashion, Vegas, and on!). I really tried not to like it. But it's grown on me in ways that I find quite challenging. And that challenge is what's best about it.
There was a review in BookForum about Hiding that couldn't let go of the central tenet of this cunning book: surface is not to be underestimated. Surface (as opposed to depth) is not simply a dead-end but the beginnings of a new worldview. While older worryworts and curmudgeonly librarian types may protest this premise, sorry, I've got five words for all of you: Sean "Puffy" Combs, Grammy Winner.
The layout of the book is as provocative as its content: our current state of affairs. Supermodels are celebrities, COPS is reality television, Las Vegas is a family getaway, tattooing is our youth's version of long hair. All of these topics get brought up and explored in studied and thoughtful detail. Yet, Taylor doesn't dissect these cultural changes from a sterile laboratory atop an ivory tower -- he digs right into it. His section on fashion reads like it's a special pullout to W magazine (let's see that happen!) and you don't need a dictionary to make sense of the fundamental mysteries being wrestled with throughout this fast-paced tome.
It can be difficult, at times, to make sense of some of the more poetic or lyrical moments but then I also don't care much for rap or French cinema. All in all, I'd put this (quite beautiful to look at) book right up there with anything Barthes has written -- with the added bonus that this is an enthusiastically eclectic and sincerely postmodern collage.

how to climb out of the postmodern soup. . .
By W. B. MCCORKLE Jr.
A positive alternative to Baudrillard's dim view of the postmodern condition can be found in Mark C. Taylor's 1997 book HIDING--a philosophical re-visoning of our contemporary Western society that instead of clinging to vestigial epistemic notions of depth and foundationalism, embraces a holistic, worldwide web view of social structures. By way of an extended, elaborate metaphor that describes our ontological condition as being intimately related to our embryonic development (we are nothing more than layers of skin upon layers of skin, ad infinitum), Taylor suggests a new epistemic outlook that no longer makes an issue of depths, but rather focuses upon the complex relationship of interactive, interacting phenomena--in his phrase, "the profundity of surface." Emergent, virtual technologies retroactively point to our own socially constructed "reality" as always-already virtual itself, and to get caught up in the trap of defining contemporary phenomena in terms of outdated analytical models will only succeed in an inescapably circular logic; as he puts it, "After (the) all has been said and done, the question that remains is not `What is virtual reality?' but `What is not virtual reality?' (267). This shift in focus allows us to give our undivided attention to the realm of practice, to aesthetics, to surface; like Slavoj Zizek in TARRYING WITH THE NEGATIVE, Taylor would have us interface with things-in-themselves, allowing us to become aware of our positioning within a complex web of relations between phenomena, as well as what that positioning will allow us to do.

An excellent economic history
By Paul & DJ
This is a very good economic history covering many details about turnpikes, Federal roads, canals, steamboats, steam ships and railroads. Additionally it briefly covers many important aspects of manufacturing and technology during the period. The economy is also discussed, with details on the depressions and deflations, plus several graphs and statistical tables.

It is very well written, easy to read and has complete references.

I have 7 pages of typed notes from this book, which is much more than the average for this type book. From my notes:

"A coal mine may exist in the United States not 10 miles from valuable ores of iron and other materials and both be useless until a canal is established between them, as the price of land carriage is too great to be borne by either." "A ton of goods could be brought 3000 miles from Europe for about $9, but for that same sum it could be moved only 30 miles in this country". U.S. Senate Committee (1816) American State Papers: Misc II (1834)p 287

A ton mile cost 30-70 cents between 1800 and 1819. Robert Fulton (1814) stated the usual cost of wagonage as 32 cents/ton mile. Transportation cost of wheat to Philadelphia equaled it's value at 218 miles. Or corn at 135 miles. 1819-22 wagon rates fell. Were as low as 12 cents /ton mile in 1822. The deflation of 1819-21 was one of the most drastic in history and caused partly by transportation costs. p-133

Only 100 miles of canals were built by 1816. Only 3 in operation were longer than 2 miles. By 1840 there were 3326 miles of canals. Most canals were built from 1824-40, with spending of $125 million. p-32

Excellent turnpikes cost $5,000-10,000 per mile. Canals typically cost $20,000-30,000 per mile. p-53

Plank roads cost $1,500-1,800 /mi. Average cost of McAdam road in NY was $3,500/mi p-30

"During the 1850s telegraph wire reached nearly every part of the country". P-110

The factory system and market system were not typical before 1850. They appeared along transportation routes. p-215

Other good economic histories of the period are: The Economic Growth of the United States: 1790-1860 by Douglas North and A New Economic View of American History by Atack and Passell.

How we got here
By Larry B
This is a fair book about the transportation system of the US, It tends to be mostly about funding and cost analysis, but does a good job of discussing technology and trade routes. I like the canal map.
